In Jerboa Dance’s style, it is an acrobatic, energetic work relying on raw emotion and the strong technical background of the dancers to draw in the audience. Rather than a story with a clear beginning and end, continuum is a window into the moments of our lives.

Splinter Dance Co at the Shunpike annual fundraiser
November 26, 2009 | Filed in: Dance, Shows

We all had a lot of fun doing this show. The premise of the 10 minute dance act combined hip hop, ballet and bollywood into an awesome farce. Basically, we showcased the olympics of the future and dance as an olympic sport. The entire theme followed the Shunkpike fundraiser theme called “Golden”
We had a comedic dance off with the last three finalists. Ballet, bollywood and hip hop all dance with their music switched by a clowny dj. The ballet crew danced in true russian form to “gettin low”, the bollywood peeps danced to our nutcracker music and the hip hop people danced to bollywood. It was hilarious. Too bad there aren’t pics of the ballerinas getting dry humped during the pas de deux. Ha. Ha. We even dressed up Chance as one of the “olympic” judges. It was cheesy fun and an nice break from creating repertory.

Social Change as Currency

Dearest Readers,

First off, I must send my thanks to all of you who bid on, or won my Ebay auctions this week.  It helped a lot, as Chance and I have split the ticket, and the auctions more than covered my half.  I can breathe easier now, and to those of you who’ve won, please take care of those gowns. I spent a lot of time, energy and love putting them together, and they hold really good memories. You are their caretakers now.

Alright, on to business. This blog post is more about semantics than anything, so I need your thoughts, read on.

Splinter’s board is comprised of 4 very strong, very distinctive women. We all have different talents that we contribute to the company, and we all have different backgrounds stylistically not only in the types of dance we do, but also in our views as artists and how we relate to art on a social level.  All are valid, and very similar in purpose despite their differences.

Let me explain..

Oh my darlings I am sorry that I haven’t written much in a while. SO UPDATES ARE DUE!

In Splinter Dance Company news, we have cast 8 dancers. With the 4 board members that makes 12!

It is incredibly exciting to see the faces of the dancers that I will be working with. Auditions were well attended and exhilarating. There were a lot of amazing dancers that showed up, it was great to see so many people dancing to my work again.

My piece “Media Luna” is a trilogy of  modern dance tangos.  I want to experiment with the different artists speaking the same sets of lines, with different background material.  I want the audience to ask themselves ” Are these people lovers? friends? family? Does it matter? How does their relationship relate to me?” I want to explore the base concepts of tough love, nurturing, gender and passion in different relationships and circumstances.  I’ve been listening to some amazing music trying to find what these concepts need to sound like. I love how connected I get with my subconscious when working on choreography, I discover so many things about whats under the surface in my life. Splinter is organizing a choreographers showcase in January, and rehearsals start in August.  I am looking at digital video cameras so I can blog the works in progress.. so, stay tuned!

Mullets, Hipster Pantz and a Steampunk Soiree
May 25, 2009 | Filed in: Dance, Music, Shameless Plugs, Shows, Thoughts, clothing, sewing

Sometimes I name blogs after the first thing I see when I start writing them.

I JUST looked out the window again and saw ANOTHER MULLET. Please, please stop.  OW. My eyes.

This Memorial day has a bright dusty feel to it.  Seattle always has a dampness in the air, but today its exceedingly bright, dry and granular. There are people around, but nothing is happening. The cafe has just me, and two girls at the bar. I expect to see tumbleweeds blow by any minute. Maybe that guy across the street in the tight hipster pants and cowboy boots will have a gun duel with the greaser smoking ciggys next to him. Could happen. It would be way more fun then watching them loiter in front of the Value Village. (more…)

I’m sitting in the cafe and the sun is shining so brightly I’m having a hard time seeing the computer screen.   I think its the only time I shun the sun.  The cafe is a gallery too,  “Caution Kid” is the exhibit in residence for the moment.  Large intricate wall hangings made with caution tape and and an exacto knife.  Expensive and square.  The wailings of a french pop group quirk above the whirr of the espresso machine, the song is familiar.  I had to think about it for a minute but then I remember. I danced for someone once that used it in a piece when I first moved to town.  (more…)
